MARKET DIARY
The LABJ 200 index bested most of the major averages last week, gaining 1.7 percent to give it a 5.4 percent return for the year to date. The local stocks' weekly gain was matched by the Nasdaq composite index, which mounted a comeback after lagging for several months, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index logged 1 percent and 0.2 percent gains, respectively. Among the week's biggest gainers were Internet service provider United Online Inc., teen retailer HOT Topic Inc. and Computer Sciences Corp., the El Segundo computer services company. United Online, up 21.2 percent, and Computer Sciences, up 11.6 percent, both posted positive quarterly results, while HOT Topic reported a 2 percent decline in same-store sales. The retailer gained 17.9 percent for the week and has recovered from a dip in its stock price in late April, when its chairman, investment banker Robert Jaffe, disclosed in a filing that he was lea ving the company. Among the week's biggest losers locally were Keystone Automotive Industries, down 13.7 percent, Guess Inc., down 10.1 percent, and Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, the franchisers and operator of the Sizzler steak houses, off 10.7 percent.
